The Poetry of Vladimir Katsman
The Poetry of Vladimir Katsman
The old man
Weakened by age
And thinned by hunger
Climbed the precipitous steps
Of the old temple
His staff wounds the stone of the steps
With every throbbing step the old man takes
As he reaches the top of the abandoned temple
He sees the shrine around which he used to play
He sees the dead tree on which he used to climb
He sees his childhood pass before him
He walks unhurriedly through the broken doors
He sees the old book
Out of which he used to read prayer everyday
He sees the altar on which he was baptized as a little boy
He sees the statue to which he used to prey
And now he found the perfect resting place
He lights the half melted candles
Reads his last prayer
And at the base of the statue the old man breathes his last breath.

Vladimir Katsman is a fourteen year old high school student. About his poem, "The Last Prayer", Mr. Katsman wrote, "i am sending this poem to you because i believe that it is one way to show just how important California is to a person, this is a true story (i know a man who was raised in California, but then taken away. before his death all he wanted was to return to California because that is where he wanted to die, he loved this land more then life itself and gave up everything just to come back to his place of birth)."
