A Note From The Editor

When I first stumbled across a copy of Robinson Jeffers' book THE CALIFORNIANS, in the stacks of the Stanford University library thirty years ago, I knew that I had found an important book for my development as a poet. Jeffers is not principally known for that volume of poetry. Although a case bound edition was re published in the 1980's, it is considered by critics to be an immature work. It was for me however a stunning accomplishment that a poet could so fuse himself with the landscape in which he lived that his poetry seemed to live and breathe with the rhythm of the California Coast. Students of meter have struggled for years to identify the pattern of his verse. It is my opinion that Jeffers' meter is the rhythm of the mountains, the wind, the ocean, and the red tail hawks that soar above the California landscape. Jeffers' poetry is the craft of a native.

Central California has been, and is a significant center for poetry since the nineteenth century. This Journal is devoted to recognizing poets who are producing poetry today in the region. We are seeking poetry which embodies the spirit of the land.

Robinson Jeffers was not a native of this region, but during his life in Carmel California, as he built his tower of stone in which to write his verse, he came to know the subject of his craft, as a potter knows his clay. He learned to smith his words in the manner of a stone cutter. He wrote:

"Yet stones have stood for a thousand years, and pained thoughts found
The honey peace in old poems."

The Journal is not accepting submittals at this time. Due to a substantial increase in the number of submittals that were not related to either our subject matter or to our subject area, we ceased to publish new editions after 2003.

The Central California journal sought poems that reflect the spirit of California, its land forms and its people. Both published and unpublished poets were invited to submit poems for publication. From time to time we also included previously published and copyrighted poems from well known poets in the region.

Thank you for visiting the Central California Poetry Journal,

Scott Galloway

What we hope to Accomplish

We hoped that poets who lived in or wrote about Central California would submit poems to the Journal, and they did with increasing mumbers. We selected a few poems each month that best fit the character and subject matter of the Journal. We continue to hope that people will come to these pages to read the poems that appear here. If we are able to produce a quality product, we believe that the Journal will offer something of value to the poets who appear here, and to those who come here to read the poems. Our goals are:

To publish poetry which celebrates the unique Central California region.

To enhance the market for the poetry of this region through electronic publishing.

To produce a high quality poetry journal.

To optimize the readability of The Journal, while enhancing our pages for those with Netscape 1.1 or later browsers, where enhancements reflect the character and landscape of Central California.

To work toward readability of the Journal by those living with visual disabilities.

To provide a resource which can be enjoyed by people of all ages.

To recognize the other California poetry resources on the Internet, through the maintenance of links to those resources.
