The Poetry of Derek Kittle

Derek Kittle lives in Auburn, Alabama with his wife while she studies at Auburn Veterinary School. Mr. Kittle lived in Monterey, California in 1996-97, and dreams each year of the day when he might return. Mr. Kittle's time in Monterey inspired his novel, which is partially set in Monterey.

Derek Kittle worked for the past several years as an attorney but reports that he has reformed his ways and quit that profession. He also reports that he has written two children's books, a novel, and lots of poetry. He is working on publishing these books while teaching literature and creative writing.

blanket of fog

in the morning
i pull you way up to my chin
soft and warm
so the day can sleep
undisturbed

in the afternoon
i cast you aside
in favor of golden-blue
sparkling wine
crashing spray
and the sweetest green

in the evening
i gather you back up
from the sea beneath my feet
this wonderful chill
is but an excuse for fires
and sitting close
this blanket
knitted from salt air
warms
my cold

pacific stare

you caught me in your deep pacific stare
endless blue water
deeper than time

held me there forever
turned me to a sunfish
gigantic slow-moving
thoughtful creature
i could swim
forever west
and never reach the end

so strange
to get lost like this
to be lost for so long
that you get used to the feeling
and forget
to look for the way out

so strange to make my home
lost
in your deep pacific stare
