JOJI A book for potters and lovers of pottery

JOJI, to be released by Solo Publications in 2003, is a study of the relationship of an American Craftsman to the land in which he or she works. In the metaphor of one man's life, Scott Galloway explores the relationship of the craft of pottery to the bioregion in which the potter works.

George Dymesich is an American potter and teacher who has worked in clay for the past thirty years. His extensive study of pottery overseas, and primarily his twenty year study of Japanese pottery has provided him with a unique perspective on the craft of pottery. By merging the approaches of American and Japanese pottery, he has achieved unity in his relationship with his craft and the region in which he works.

In this portrayal of the development of the aesthetic of George Dymesich, Scott Galloway has captured the twin cultural perspectives that drive the potter’s craft. JOJI is the story of a resourceful and rugged American potter who grew up working as a cowboy on a ranch in Northern California, to achieve mastery of his craft through introspection gained from years of working and studying in Japan.

The form of the text is narrative, but the author has included revealing dialog with the potter. In that dialog, George Dymesich provides insights into his life and work, chronicling his ideas on the process of working in clay. JOJI will make exciting reading for serious students of American and Japanese Pottery. Those who are beginning to work in clay will benefit greatly from George Dymesich’s insights into the process of pottery.
